Meninges - The meninges (singular meninx) are the system of membranes that envelop the central nervous system. The meninges consist of three layers, the dura mater, the arachnoid mater, and the pia mater.

Dura mater - The dura mater (from the Latin "hard mother"), or pachymeninx, is the tough and inflexible outermost of the three layers of the meninges surrounding the brain. The other two meninges are the pia mater and the arachnoid mater.

Arachnoid mater - The Arachnoid mater is one of the three layers of the meninges, interposed between the dura mater and the pia mater and separated from the pia mater by the subarachnoid space. The pia and arachnoid membranes are called leptomeninges (Orlando Regional Healthcare, 2004).

Aseptic meningitis - Aseptic meningitis is a condition in which the layers lining of the brain, or meninges, become inflamed and a bacterial or viral source cannot be detected.
